Ancient Dwarf Coins

Ancient Dwarf Coins are the ancient currency once used by the inhabitants of the Lost Dwarf Fortress.

The coins are mostly made out of copper, brass, iron and other non-precious metals. They are effectively worthless (can be spent as copper coins if vendor is willing o accept them as currency) but have immense historical value to collectors or scholars.

The coins of different denominations feature dwarven heroes, and scenes from ancient legends. If arranged in a circular pattern they can be used to recount old legends and heroic exploits. Several lost dwarf nations have used currency of this type, but the exact denominations and artwork on them differs. Each set can be used to tell up to a dozen different stories based on their position in the circle, ordering and which way they face. Scholars seek out these coins because they are the key to study lost dwarf folklore. A full set in a good condition is extremely hard to find.

Incomplete sets are worth less, because cultures of different nations differed, and those differences were reflected in their coinage. While many used visages of same popular heroes, the legends featured on the coin sets differed widely. Many scholars fell into a trap of trying to assemble full sets from many sources, creating misleading or completely nonsensical arrangements that told false legends. Most of such work has since been discredited.
